Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was speaking at a meeting with Xi Jinping, member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party, and Vice President of China on December 21 in Hanoi.

Vietnam-China relations were of great strategic importance to both countries, the Chinese leader said, hoping that China and Vietnam would continue prosper under the motto “Friendly neighborliness, comprehensive cooperation, long-term stability and looking towards the future”.

After the talks, Anh, Doan and Xi witnessed the signing of a number of agreements on health, information and communications between the two countries.

On the second day, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping had an official meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

Both agreed that the two nations should continue to enhance political trust and mutual understanding, maintain visits and meetings of high-ranking leaders, and improve the role and efficiency of cooperative mechanisms.

Regarding land border issues, Dung requested the two sides work closely to implement three signed documents and speed up the signing of agreements on tourism at Ban Gioc waterfall, free travel of ships in the Bac Luan river mouth, and management and use of river and stream water resources in the border areas.

On the sea issue, Dung proposed the two sides settle sea disputes based on the common perception between the two countries’ leaders, the agreement on basic principles guiding the settlement of sea-related issues and international law.-
