Kids’ forum pushes for stronger voice

Updated: 09:46’ - 03/09/2013

Many children on August 8 affirmed that they wished to be informed and consulted on issues related to young people, and that adults, especially their parents, should respect their wishes.

This was one of the recommendations made by child representatives from 29 provinces and cities in a two-day national forum on the draft amendments to the law on child protection, care and education.

Dang Hoa Nam, deputy director of the Department of Child Protection and Care, said the forum focused primarily on the issues of children’s rights of participation, violence against children, child marriages and labor, and chances to access education for children with disabilities and HIV.

Nguyen Ngoc Ha, a child from Thanh Hoa province, said the law should define responsibilities of the society, agencies and parents to ensure children grow up safely. “The law is for us so it should be partly made by us and based on our demands and wishes,” she said.

Children agreed it was necessary to have specific levels of children participation so that they could be respected.

The drafting board and related agencies should translate children’s dreams and wishes into suitable and feasible policies so that all Vietnamese children could have a memorable childhood, a child from Da Nang city said.

The official list of children’s recommendations would be submitted to the drafting board and related ministries for consideration.-
