The "fishing ban" imposed by China in the East Sea violates Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) as well as its sovereignty rights and jurisdiction over the waters and exclusive economic zone defined in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Foreign Ministry's vice spokesperson Doan Khac Viet stated on April 20.

Vietnam on April 6 called out China's illegal activities in its waters and doubled down on its claims of the islands in the South China Sea.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), that codified and progressively developed international law in the maritime domain, has received wide recognition and support from the international community. To the 40th anniversary, December 10, 2022, the Convention has been ratified by 167 countries and the European Union (EU), 150 countries have become parties to the Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of December 10, 1982, and 90 countries have acceded to the Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of December 10, 1982 relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks, adopted on August 4, 1995.

Vietnam on June 23 denounced China’s illegal military exercise in the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago as a serious violation of its sovereignty over the South China Sea Island chain.

China needs to end its militarization in the South China Sea in violation of Vietnam’s territories and to refrain from escalating tensions.
