Among Vietnam’s pledges as part of its election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), it is encouraging that the country prioritized upholding its commitments and obligations under the international human rights treaties, of which Vietnam has ratified seven out of nine, according to UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pauline Tamesis.

Visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink congratulated Vietnam on its election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2023 – 2025 tenure, at a meeting with Vietnamese journalists in Hanoi on October 12.

A resolution on human rights and climate change drafted by Vietnam in coordination with Bangladesh and the Philippines has been adopted at the 50th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The United Nations Human Rights Council on July 14 wrapped up its 47th session in Geneva, Switzerland, with 27 resolutions adopted, including one regarding climate change and human rights, which was initiated and compiled by Vietnam together with Bangladesh and the Philippines, focusing on vulnerable groups, especially the disabled and the elderly.

Under the recent universal periodic review, the United Nations Human Rights Council has appreciated the achievements recorded by Vietnam in realizing its commitments on human rights. It has also made hundreds of recommendations for Vietnam to better protect and guarantee human rights, 182 of which are accepted by the country. In criminal justice, 17 recommendations of the UNHRC are directly related to the formulation and revision of the 2015 Penal Code.
