Second national congress of lawyers concluded

The second national congress of the Vietnam Bar Federation (VBF) wrapped up in Hanoi on April 19 after three working days. After the closing ceremony, the VBF’s leaders held a press conference to announce the newly elected leadership and other results.

According to VBF Vice Chairman Do Ngoc Thinh, the congress elected 95 members to the second term of office’s National Lawyers’ Council, including 63 chairpersons of bar associations in provinces and cities across the country. The Council convened the first session and elected the VBF’s Standing Committee composed of 21 members and four Vice Chairpersons.

The next session will be held soon to elect a Chairperson and an additional Vice Chairperson. Pending such election, Vice Chairman Do Ngoc Thinh will be responsible for administering and representing the Vietnam Bar Federation in internal and external relations.

The congress themed “Consolidation - Discipline - Intelligence - Justice Protection” focused on discussing and adopting a summary report on the performance of the federation in the first tenure, and drew up directions for the upcoming tenure.

The federation and lawyers will continue suggesting legal improvements to concerned authorities in order to create a favorable legal framwork for lawyers and their organizations to practice effectively.

VBF Vice Chairman Phan Trung Hoai said that together with contributions to judicial reforms, law building, and consultation on important international affairs, especially participating in the preparation of legal formalities for fighting for national sovereignty over sea areas and islands in the East Sea, the federation will provide more pro-bono legal aid to disadvantaged people and policy beneficiaries.-
