The election of deputies to the 16th National Assembly (NA) for the 2026-31 tenure is scheduled to take place on March 15, at 182 constituencies nationwide. According to the National Election Council, the final list comprises 864 candidates, from whom voters will elect 500 deputies to the new legislature.
In terms of gender, the candidate list includes 472 men (54.63 per cent) and 392 women (45.37 per cent), ensuring the targeted proportion of female candidates in line with efforts to enhance women’s participation in the country’s highest state power body.
The list also includes 188 candidates from ethnic minority groups, accounting for 21.76 per cent, helping ensure the representation of ethnic communities in the legislature. Meanwhile, 65 candidates are non-Party members, equivalent to 7.52 per cent of the total.
Regarding educational qualifications, the majority of candidates possess high academic credentials. Of the 864 candidates, 593 hold postgraduate degree (68.63 per cent) and 261 have university degree (30.21 per cent).
The structure of candidates also reflects a combination of experienced persons and new faces. Of the total, 612 candidates are standing for election for the first time (70.83 per cent), while 235 candidates are seeking re-election (27.2 per cent) and 17 candidates have previously run but were not elected (1.97 per cent).
In terms of nomination sources, 643 candidates are introduced by local authorities (74.42 per cent), 217 by central-level agencies (25.12 per cent), and four candidates are self-nominated (0.46 per cent).
Age-wise, the 40-50 age group accounts for the largest proportion, with 384 candidates (44.44 per cent). This is followed by 259 candidates aged between over 50 and 60 (29.98 per cent), 187 candidates under 40 (21.64 per cent), 26 candidates aged between over 60 and 65 (3.01 per cent), and eight candidates over 65 (0.93 per cent).- (VLLF)
