ASEAN leaders approve documents boosting multifaceted cooperation

The 23rd ASEAN Summit closed two-day meeting on October 10 in Brunei, focusing on establishing the ASEAN Community by 2015 as well as determining shared goals for the association beyond 2015.

The ASEAN leaders exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, including regional structure, as well as the way to expand and deepen relationships between the member states.

Addressing the summit, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung stressed the necessity to build a united and strong ASEAN Community and promote the bloc’s central role in ensuring peace, security, prosperity and development in the region.

At the end of the summit and related meetings, ASEAN leaders and their partners approved the Declaration on the ASEAN Community’s Vision beyond 2015, the Declaration on Youth Entrepreneurship and Employment, the Declaration on Strengthening Social Protection, the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children, the Declaration on Enhancing Cooperation in Disaster Management, the Declaration on Non-Communicable Diseases, and the Declaration on the eighth East Asia Summit on Food Security.

At the closing ceremony, Brunei handed over the ASEAN chairmanship to Myanmar for 2014.-
