Ho Chi Minh City University of Law (ULAW) launched its “drug-free school” model on October 23 as part of efforts to implement resolutions of the Party Committees of Ho Chi Minh City and the university, with the goal of building a drug-free city and university by 2030.

The launch ceremony was attended by representatives of the Ho Chi Minh City Public Security Department, local public security offices, the university’s management board, faculty members, staff and students.

Presenting the results of a survey involving nearly 5,000 students and hundreds of staff members, Le The Tai, Head of ULAW’s Student Affairs Department, said most respondents demonstrated a good understanding of the harmful effects of drugs. Specifically, 66.1 per cent rated their awareness as good, while 25.8 per cent rated it as fair.

However, the survey also revealed a need to strengthen students’ ability to recognise increasingly sophisticated methods used to lure people into drug use and trafficking.

The findings showed that students favoured more engaging and interactive approaches to drug prevention education. Some 78.1 per cent preferred short videos and infographics, 77.4 per cent wanted direct discussions with public security officers and experts, and 72.8 per cent supported simulated scenarios and interactive games.

Based on the survey findings, the model focuses on developing three key skills: identifying risks, refusing drugs and protecting oneself, and reporting incidents and seeking assistance. It comprises six components covering early-warning surveys, awareness-raising activities, safe community networks, counselling services, improvements to the learning and living environment, and coordination among relevant agencies. The model will be implemented across the university’s facilities and its campus in Quang Tri province.

Speaking at the ceremony, ULAW Vice-Rector Vu Van Nhiem warned of the serious consequences of drug use for individuals’ health, character and future, stressing that student safety remained a top priority for the university.

He said students should not be regarded merely as recipients of protection but should play an active role in ensuring the model’s success. He urged them to raise their awareness, adopt healthy lifestyles and stay away from illegal drugs.

Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Dong, representing the HCMC Public Security Department, commended the university’s proactive efforts to maintain security and create a safe learning environment.

He emphasised the need for continuous drug prevention education using modern, accessible communication methods to help students recognise tactics used to lure them into drug-related activities. He also encouraged students to practise responsible online behaviour, verify information before sharing it and set an example in complying with the law.- (VLLF)
