Ministry seeks to expand foreign investment

Updated: 16:08’ - 31/03/2005

A seminar held by the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) to promote foreign direct investment (FDI) in the north and center of Vietnam opened in Hanoi on March 4.

“The seminar should discuss regulations on, and cooperation between, investment promotion centers of the MPI’s Foreign Investment Agency (FIA) and those in the provinces,” said Mr. Tran Dinh Khien, Vice Minister of MPI.

“Cooperation will ensure that the benefits of FDI are spread among provinces and will avoid the concentration of investment in a few places,” he said.

The FIA is planning to set up a fund for investment promotion activities in the second quarter, providing support for provinces, according to FIA director Phan Huu Thang.

It will build a website for investment promotion, connecting with provinces to provide information to investors, he said.

The FIA will also cooperate in implementing a project of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development to connect FDI with Vietnam’s small- and medium-sized enterprises, and a project of the Japan International Cooperation Agency to improve the capacity of investment promotion centers.

According to the MPI, Vietnam attracted a total investment of USD 4.2 billion last year and expects a total investment of USD 4.5-5 billion this year.-
