Party Central Committee’s 11th plenum opens

Updated: 15:35’ - 24/01/2005

The Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee opened its 11th plenum on January 17, where General Secretary Nong Duc Manh called for top members to work on measures to strengthen the Party and its leadership and outline new development strategies.

The Party leader said this plenum was crucial to preparations for the upcoming 10th Party National Congress, scheduled to open in 2006, since it would approve the congress’s agenda.

The meeting, expected to last for eight days, heard a political report; a report on some supplements to the 1991 political platform; the country’s socio-economic development orientations for the 2006-2010 period; a report on the Party building, and amendments to the Party’s statute.

The Politburo presented a review of the Party’s theoretical and practical issues in the past 20 years of doi moi (renewal), as well as findings of the last year’s review of the leadership by the Politburo and Secretariat.

Mr. Manh said Vietnam plans to develop a knowledge-based economy, accelerate international integration and exploit available internal and external resources.

He emphasized the need to bolster national defense, security and foreign relations to ensure the nation’s independence, sovereignty, political and social stability.

He said the Party would continue to take necessary political, ideological, organiza-tional and ethical steps to maintain its role as the vanguard of the Vietnamese workers.-
