Dignitaries, monks and nuns, representing religious communities in the southern region have lauded the new Ordinance on Beliefs and Religions.

More than 100 dignitaries from 15 vicariates of the Catholic Church, the Executive Council of Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, the Executive Board of the southern Protestant Church, the Cao Dai and Hoa Hao sects and other religious organizations discussed the Ordinance in Ho Chi Minh city on August 4.

The participants described the Ordinance as an important step toward the elaboration of a law on beliefs and religions, creating a legal basis for religious and belief activities and improving the efficiency of State management thereover.

The Ordinance showed the renewal spirit on the basis of the Party’s, State’s and Government’s policies and regulations on religious practices, ensuring citizens’ exercise of their right to religious freedom, according to the delegates.

They said the Ordinance could help enhance solidarity among people and create favorable conditions for religions to contribute to national construction and development.

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Xuan, vice-chairman of the Government’s Committee for Religious Affairs, highlighted the necessity of the Ordinance and said the Ordinance was of great political and legal significance in the new situation.

The Government would soon issue a decree guiding the implementation of the Ordinance, Mr. Xuan said.-
