Overseas Vietnamese (OV) affairs in 2024 will focus on two orientations of strengthening the great solidarity of the Vietnamese community abroad and promoting resources from the community, which will be implemented with seven major solutions, stated Vice Chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs Nguyen Manh Dong at a press conference in Hanoi on January 11.
The solutions include strengthening policy research and recommendation, and diversifying measures to encourage OVs, especially youngsters and reputable people, to make contributions to the homeland, Dong said.
At the same time, the committee will support the community in enhancing their legal status and settling down, especially in difficult areas, while assisting Vietnamese associations to complete their organization and enhance operational efficiency.
More solutions will be rolled out to attract resources from OVs, while legal regulations, policies and mechanisms related to OVs will continue to be perfected, and connectivity among Vietnamese businesses and intellectuals abroad fostered, he said.
The official stated that a plan to organize the day to honor the Vietnamese language abroad in 2024 will be implemented, along with solutions to renovate contents and methods of teaching and learning it, thus maintaining the national cultural identity.
Dong underlined that methods to provide information to OVs will also be diversified. Alongside, coordination among agencies in OV affairs will be improved, together with the strengthening of the training of officials for the work, he added.
The official noted that last year, amid challenging global economic situation, the Vietnamese community abroad still made great contributions to the homeland.
Notably, the amount of remittances sent to Ho Chi Minh City in the year rose 35% year on year to about USD 8.92 billion, the highest level ever.
The State Bank of Vietnam estimated that the total amount of remittances to Vietnam in 2023 increased 25-30 percent year on year.
The official underlined that the soft power from the 6 million Vietnamese people in 130 countries and territories has been increasingly promoted, contributing to strengthening Vietnam’s relations with other countries.
Affirming the Party and State’s great attention to OV affairs, Dong said that many projects to implement the Politburo’s conclusion regarding OV affairs in the new situation have been carried out, including one to optimize resources from OVs serving the country’s development in the new situation, which was approved by the Prime Minister in November 2023.
The project focuses on providing the Vietnamese community abroad with more favorable positions and conditions to develop and make more contributions to the homeland, stated Dong.- (VNA/VLLF)
