Watchdog agency to monitor garment exports to US

The Ministry of Industry and Trade is formulating a mechanism for monitoring US-bound garment exports in a bid to avoid likely dumping suits.

It is essential to establish a supervision agency or task force responsible for tracking volumes and prices of garments and preventing sudden rises in exports or unreasonably low prices, according to an official of the Ministry’s Import and Export Department.

The mechanism would be a breakthrough, shifting from a pre-check to a post-check regime, the official said, adding the Ministry was determined to step up inspection of garment exporters to prevent illegal trade practices, ensure the prestige of Vietnam’s textiles and garments and enforce international trade rules.

It is suggested that to avoid accusations of dumping inexpensive goods on the US market, exporters should focus on high-value contracts for US-bound exports. Garment producers should also explore untapped markets in Japan, EU and South Africa so as to mitigate risks of dumping actions against US exports.-
