13th National Party Congress ends
The successful eight-day 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) concluded on February 1.

The successful eight-day 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) concluded on Monday, February 1.

The congress elected a 200-member Party Central Committee, comprising of 180 official and 20 alternate members.

The 13th Party Central Committee convened its first plenum to elect the Politburo, the Party General Secretary, the Secretariat and the Inspection Commission, besides the commission's head for a new tenure.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was re-elected in the 13th tenure with the majority of votes.

The 13th Politburo includes 18 members.

Re-elected members include eight from the 12th tenure Politiburo, namely Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Pham Minh Chinh, Head of the Party Central Committee's Organization Commission, Vuong Dinh Hue, Secretary of Hanoi Party Committee, Truong Thi Mai, Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilization, Vo Van Thuong, Head of the Party Central Committee's Commission for Communication and Education, Pham Binh Minh, Deputy Prime Minister-Minister of Foreign Affairs, and To Lam, Minister of Public Security.

The committee entrusted the Politburo to assign some members to the Secretariat. The committee also elected five members of the secretariat.

The 19-member Inspection Commission was elected in the first plenum. The commission is headed by Politburo member Tran Cam Tu.

In his closing speech, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said that the 13th National Congress of the CPV was a success.

He said after seven days of working efficiently and seriously and with a high sense of responsibility, the congress completed all agenda as planned.

Delegates discussed in a candid and democratic manner and unanimously passed important documents, including the political report and a report evaluating the implementation of socio-economic tasks between 2016 and 2020 and orientations and tasks for 2021-2025.

Party General Secretary Trong thanked the delegates for keeping their trust in the new 13th Party Central Committee, the supreme organ on Party affairs.

He said the committee was deeply aware of its great responsibility towards the Party, the people and the country.

“The 13th Central Party Committee pledged to unite, wholeheartedly serving the country, the people, constantly cultivating and improving capacity, qualifications, political bravery, ethical qualities following the example of the great President Hồ Chí Minh. The committee will promote its intelligence, with the best efforts, together with the whole Party, the entire army and the people striving to realise the resolution and tasks passed by the 13th Congress,” Trong said.

"The success of the 13th National Congress will be a strong encouragement for the whole Party, the entire people and the army to continue to overcome all difficulties, challenges, taking advantage of opportunities and advantage to soon turn our country into a developed country with high income and a socialist orientation."

The Party chief also thanked international parties, organisations and friends for extending their congratulations to the congress, which, he said, demonstrated their friendship and solidarity with the Vietnamese Party and people.
