By 2030, the number of passengers traveling by air through airports across the country will reach 275.9 million, accounting for 1.5-2 percent of the total market share of the transport sector and 3-4 percent of the total number of passengers traveling by air domestically.

Such is one of the targets set forth in Prime Minister Decision 648/QD-TTg, approving the general master plan on development of the system of airports and aerodromes nationwide for the 2021-30 period, with a vision toward 2050.

The prime objective of the master plan is to develop the airport system in a synchronous and modern manner to meet the demand for transportation and international integration. Other specific objectives are to ensure environmental protection, efficient use of resources and national defense and security, and improve the country’s economic competitiveness, thus turning Vietnam into a developing country with modern industry and upper middle income by 2030.

Regarding specific targets, the total cargo volume transported by air will reach around 4.1 million tons by 2030, accounting for 0.05-0.1 percent of the total transportation volume.

As for infrastructure facilities, the master plan prioritizes investment in a number of large airports such as Noi Bai international airport in the Hanoi capital region, and Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports in the Ho Chi Minh City region. It is planned to gradually upgrade and efficiently operate existing airports, and continue investing in new airports so as to increase the total design capacity of the airport system to serve 294.5 million passenger arrivals per annum, striving to enable 95 percent of the population to access airport services within the distance of 100 kilometers.

The country is set to have 30 airports by 2030, including 14 ones serving international flights and 16 ones serving domestic flights.

Specifically, 14 international airports include Van Don, Cat Bi, Noi Bai, Tho Xuan, Vinh, Phu Bai, Da Nang, Chu Lai, Cam Ranh, Lien Khuong, Long Thanh, Tan Son Nhat, Can Tho and Phu Quoc.

The 16 airports serving only domestic flights are Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Sa Pa, Na San, Dong Hoi, Quang Tri, Phu Cat, Tuy Hoa, Pleiku, Buon Ma Thuot, Phan Thiet, Rach Gia, Ca Mau, Con Dao, Thanh Son and Bien Hoa.

Aviation logistics centers will be built at airports, including Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat, Van Don, Cat Bi, Da Nang, Chu Lai, Long Thanh, Can Tho and some other airports, to serve an annual cargo transportation volume of over 250,000 tons. These logistics centers must be able to provide storage facilities and connect appropriate transport modes for transportation of cargoes from/to the aforesaid airports.

It is also targeted to establish an international transshipment logistics center at Chu Lai airport.- (VNA/VLLF)
