Objectives of the master plan on development and application of biotechnology in Vietnam through 2020, approved under Prime Minister’s Decision No. 14/2008/QD-TTg of January 22, are to build and develop biotechnology into an important industry key to national economic development and playing an essential role in national industrialization and modernization.
One of the major tasks set forth by the master plan for responsible agencies is to concentrate resources of scientific research into development and application of genetic, cell, microbiological, enzyme and protein technologies in order to create new plant varieties and animal strains having superior properties and suitable to market and daily-life needs.
At the same time, biotechnology will be practically applied to medicine and pharmaceutical to turn out new products with better curative effects, provide hi-tech medical services for effectively preventing and combating dangerous epidemics and better meet the people’s healthcare needs.
Biotechnology research, development and application are also aimed to create environmentally friendly technologies and products, treat pollution and waste, restore and develop natural ecosystems, and produce biofuels for use in cleaner production processes and maintenance of energy security.
By 2015, around 12,000 scientists and laboratory workers will be trained at graduate and postgraduate levels, both at home and abroad.-
