Officials appreciate assistance of FNGOs

Over the past decade, foreign non-governmental organizations (FNGOs) have implemented more than 28,000 projects worth a total of USD 2.4 billion in Vietnam, making up 0.21-0.45 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, said Ha Kim Ngoc, chairman of the Committee for International Non-governmental Organizations Affairs, at a conference on November 28 in Hanoi.

Ngoc added that poverty reduction and sustainable development projects undertaken by NGOs have helped improve the living conditions and lessened the burden on a state budget already stretched beyond its capacity.

Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh said that the percentage of households living below the poverty line fell from 13.7 percent in 2008 to 9.6 percent last year while the average income of these households nearly doubled in the past five years.

He said the country hoped to receive support from FNGOs in relevant fields, and pledged that the Government would create favorable conditions for the FNGOs’ operations and make the legal environment more suitable and favorable for their sponsoring activities.-
