The 14th plenum of the XIth Party Central Committee closed on January 13 in Hanoi, reaching a consensus on the signing of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement in accordance with the law on conclusion of, accession to and implementation of treaties.

In his closing speech, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said the three-day event took place in a serious and democratic manner, as delegates had a high level of responsibility and duty to the country.

They agreed that the opportunities stemming from the TPP were enormous, though challenges lay ahead, he said.

“With the country’s experience from 30 years of doi moi (renewal), and global economic integration along with the creativity, efforts and united resolve of the entire Party, people, army and business community, we are confident that we can overcome any challenges, and seize opportunities afforded by the TPP agreement for rapid and sustainable development,” the Party leader said.

The Party Central Committee assigns the Government’s Party Caucus Commission to direct the TPP negotiation delegation to continue working with other TPP members to finalize necessary procedures for official signing of the agreement in early February.

Meanwhile, the Politburo is responsible for directing preparations to submit the agreement to the National Assembly for ratification according to law. It will also have to direct the drafting of a resolution on effective international integration, given the country’s engagement in new-generation free trade agreements, including the TPP. The Politburo is tasked to instruct the Government to formulate an action program to implement the TPP.

The delegates also approved a list of nominations for key leading positions in the Party and the State of the XIIth tenure.
