PARTY CONGRESS TO FOCUS ON DEVELOPMENT ORIENTATIONS AND CORRUPTION
The top priority of the Xth National Party Congress, scheduled from April 18-25, would be to adopt strategic orientations for further comprehensive and sustainable development of the country and achievement of the set targets, said Politburo member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) Phan Dien.

It would, among many other important issues, focus on measures to fight corruption, bureaucracy and waste, Mr. Phan Dien, who is also the permanent member of the CPVCC’s Secretariat, told domestic and foreign correspondents at a press conference held in Hanoi on April 13.

He announced the Congress’ theme, which is “Improving the Party’s leadership and struggling capacity, promoting the entire nation’s strength, boosting comprehensive renewal, soon delivering our country from its underdevelopment status.”

The Congress is expected to elect 160 official members and 25 alternate members to the CPVCC, 15-17 members to the Politburo and 11 members to the CPVCC’s Secretariat.

Mr. Phan Dien said the election would be based on the principle of promotion of democracy in order to select people with real talents and good virtues.

Candidates to the position of the Party General Secretary, to the Politburo and the Inspection Commission of the Xth CPVCC will be recommended at the upcoming 15th plenum of the IXth CPVCC.

The Xth Party Congress will draw the participation of 1,178 delegates, 64.68% of whom are first-time delegates, the youngest is 30 years of age and the oldest is 77.-
