Roundtable to raise effectiveness of development aid

Updated: 14:31’ - 26/02/2007

The Vietnamese Government and donors have recognized the importance of raising the effectiveness of aid in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Vietnam Development Goals (VDGs), said Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem at the Third International Roundtable on Managing for Development Results.

The four-day roundtable, which opened in Hanoi on February 6, aimed to achieve strong political commitments and coordinated actions among partner countries and donor organizations in their efforts to raise the effectiveness of aid by managing for development results. Based on the roundtable’s results, partner countries and donor organizations will build national plans of action on managing for development results and make political commitments in the near future.

Vietnam was one of the first nations to include the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness in the Hanoi Core Statement on Aid Effectiveness, and the country involved the “whole society” in the implementation of its new five-year socio-economic development plan, Mr. Khiem said.

Foreign aid plays an important role in the Vietnamese economy but does not serve as a factor in creating significant difference for national development, and this is important for the country’s sustainable development, said Mr. Omakar Shrestha, head of the ADB Vietnam’s Economics and Planning Section.-
