Prime Minister expresses nation’s wish to play greater role in global affairs

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung affirmed Vietnam’s intention to seek a non-permanent seat in the United Nations (UN) Security Council during 2008-2009 to make contribution to the international community.

He made the expression during the 62nd annual session of the UN General Assembly in New York from September 25-29.

“Vietnam is fully aware of the great honor and heavy responsibility of being a non-permanent member of the Security Council,” he said.

At his September 26 banquet for the session-attending leaders, the Prime Minister appreciated other countries’ support of Vietnam’s candidacy.

He also highlighted the UN’s significant contributions to international affairs and individual nations over its 60 years, and wished for the UN’s continued success.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister called at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), where he witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between the NYSE and the Hanoi Securities Trading Center on personnel training, exchange of managerial experience and building of trading systems.

He also witnessed the signing of major contracts between Vietnamese and US enterprises, including those between the Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) and the City Group and the SSA Marine to develop Vinalines’ fleets, seaports and maritime services.-
