From May 15, Vietnamese and foreign individuals will be banned from carrying gold bars and raw materials when leaving or entering Vietnam.
The ban is prescribed in State Bank of Vietnam’s Circular No. 11/2014/TT-NHNN of March 28.
This new regulation allows the carrying of gold jewelry and fine-art objects made of gold provided the total weight of these objects is not more than 300 grams.
In case travelers bring more than the permitted amount, they must declare it to the customs offices.
The above regulation also applies to foreign individuals who are permitted to reside in Vietnam.
Meanwhile, overseas Vietnamese may carry gold, including gold bars and gold materials, ranging in weight from 300 grams to less than 1 kilogram, and must declare it to the customs offices.
In case the weight of the gold is 1 kilogram or more, the carriers must present a license granted by the provincial-level branch of the State Bank of Vietnam.
This new regulation will replace Decision No. 1165/2001/QD-NHNN of September 12, 2001.-
