Enterprises get easier to protect trademarks

Updated: 16:21’ - 25/07/2006

Trademark owners in Vietnam will get easier to make international registrations when the Madrid Protocol relating to the Madrid Agreement on international registration of trademarks comes into force on July 11.

To register trademarks in member countries of the Madrid Protocol, owners have to send only one application to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) through the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) of the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology.

The accession to the protocol would help enterprises reduce registration costs. Such accession would make it easier for trademark owners in Vietnam to seek for protection and diminish risks of trademark loss, said director of the EC-ASEAN IP Rights Cooperation Program Niclas Morey.

Improving IP protection would promote investment and trade for both local and foreign enterprises in Vietnam, he said.-
