The 15th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit closed on July 16 in the Egyptian town of Sharm El Sheikh, where a final document was released affirming the need to heighten NAM’s role and activity for world peace and security.
In the document, the Sharm El Sheikh Declaration, leaders from 118 member countries, including Vietnam, stressed their determination to boost multilateralism while maintaining the central role of the United Nations, protecting the interests of developing countries, and working out forms of material and spiritual solidarity.
At the two-day summit themed “International Solidarity for Peace and Development,” the leaders pledged to pursue different methods of regional and global cooperation, such as boosting coordination in regional and international forums and expanding social exchanges and cultural dialogues.
They also reinforced commitment to protecting and promoting human rights but added that no kind of human rights violations warrant interference in a nation’s internal affairs.
Participation of the Vietnamese delegation led by President Nguyen Minh Triet showed the country’s high-level commitment to the common causes of the movement.
On the sidelines of the summit, President Triet held talks with the Cuban and Egyptian presidents to boost bilateral relations.-
