The Vietnamese Government always protects and promotes human rights, taking the people as both the ultimate objective and driving force of any socio-economic development policy in the country, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh.
He made the statement on May 8 while presenting the nation’s report under the Universal Periodical Review of the United Nations Human Rights Council at a session in Geneva, Switzerland, which lasted from May 4-15.
Vietnam attached importance to preparing the report to realize its membership obligations, accumulate experience, fully ensure human rights and boost international cooperation, Minh said, underlining the country’s achievements in building a comprehensive legal system to ensure and promote human rights, with people’s participation in law inspection, supervision and enforcement.
At the session, which was attended by delegates from 192 member states of the Council and many United Nations agencies and international organizations, ASEAN member countries said they welcomed Vietnam’s participation in many treaties and cooperation on human rights, as well as its coordination in establishing the ASEAN human rights mechanism.-
