Vietnam will actively participate in the Association of National Police Forces of the ASEAN (ASEANPOL) with the highest sense of responsibility, President Nguyen Minh Triet on May 13 told head delegates at the 29th conference of the ASEANPOL in Hanoi.
He said the country wished to boost cooperation with other ASEAN nations as well as partner and dialogue countries for world and regional peace, stability and development.
The president expressed his belief that further development of ASEANPOL would help guarantee regional security and that better coordination between the region and world will make crime prevention more effective.
The three-day conference under the theme “For a peaceful and developed ASEAN” focused on cooperation in fighting crimes, drugs and human trafficking; terrorism; weapon smuggling; and financial, banking and hi-tech crime.
It also discussed the establishment of an ASEANPOL Secretariat and the judicial support among member countries, as well as projects to enhance cooperation in crime prevention and fighting.
Minister of Public Security Le Hong Anh said the conference would help complete the organizational apparatus of ASEANPOL and speed up regional efforts to train police and improve their ability to cope with a diverse range of criminal activities.
He proposed speeding up cooperation in building an information center on transnational crime with a view to raising crime-fighting capacity of member countries.-
