Achievements of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partners have laid an important foundation for the Association to intensify cooperation in the near future and improve its role and prestige in the international arena, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said on August 7 at a meeting to mark the Association’s 41st anniversary.
The leading important factor for ASEAN to continue to obtain successes in the new stage is that it should promote concerted efforts to ensure a peaceful, stable and cooperative environment in the region on the basis of the goals and principles set in the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation and the ASEAN Charter, Mr. Dung said.
Member countries should do their best to strengthen the Association’s unity, increase friendship and the sense of community, promote cooperation and solve all differences by peaceful means, the Prime Minister suggested.
He proposed that ASEAN make further efforts to improve the quality of “unity in diversity” in the spirit of common objectives and basic principles such as consensus and non-interference.
Prime Minister Dung also recommended that the Association quickly realize the ASEAN Charter because it would bring about a reform in its organization and operation, helping improve the quality and efficiency of cooperation among member nations.-
