Vietnamese citizenship registration further simplified
Overseas Vietnamese have no papers proving their Vietnamese citizenship may now register with an overseas Vietnamese representative agency to get certification of their Vietnamese citizenship.

In order to create favorable conditions for overseas Vietnamese to retain their Vietnamese citizenship, the Government recently issued Decree No. 97/2014/ND-CP amending and supplementing a number of articles of Decree No. 78/2009/ND-CP of September 22, 2009, detailing the implementation of the Vietnamese Nationality Law.

Specifically, overseas Vietnamese who did not lose their Vietnamese citizenship under Vietnamese law before July 1, 2009, and have no papers proving their Vietnamese citizenship may now register with an overseas Vietnamese representative agency to get certification of their Vietnamese citizenship and be granted Vietnamese passports according to the prescribed order and procedures.

Vietnam’s diplomatic missions, consulates or other agencies authorized to perform the consular function in foreign countries where citizenship certification requesters permanently reside will receive and settle requests for Vietnamese citizenship certification and grant of Vietnamese passports.

A requester who lives in a country or territory without a Vietnamese representative agency may submit his/her dossier at an agency that is concurrently in charge of such country or territory or any representative agency at his/her convenience.

The list of overseas agencies competent to settle citizenship-related affairs is available at the portals of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice.

This new regulation will take effect on December 1, 2014.-
