The surprising move was decided despite an investigation by the General Department of Customs concluding that it was too early to accuse the US of dumping chicken meat in the local market.
According to the investigation, the nation’s retailers and wholesalers have so far this year imported about 70,000 tons of chicken parts (mostly legs and wings) worth a total USD 63.7 million at an average pretax import price of USD 0.91 per kilogram (VND 19,600), a little lower than 2014’s price of around USD 1 per kilogram (VND 21,500).
However, according to Quyet, the price of chicken meat imported from the US in 2013 was VND 27,000-28,000 per kilogram, but reported to have sharply decreased to only VND 17,000-20,000 per kilogram this year.
Based on information from investigations into sale prices of chicken meat in the US market conducted by the Southeast Livestock Association, Quyet believes that US chicken meat has been dumped in Vietnam and informs that the Association is working with the Dong Nai Livestock Association to expeditiously prepare complete dossiers for the dumping lawsuit before transferring them to the Ministry of Industry and Trade's Vietnam Competition Authority.

In a recent meeting with local enterprises and livestock farms that seek to export cattle and poultry meat, Agriculture and Rural Development Deputy Minister Vu Van Tam affirmed the ministry’s support for the decision to bring the case to court.
The associations are seeking financial sources to pay for the lawsuit, which may cost between USD 400,000 and 450,000.- (VLLF)
