ASEM enhances Asia-Europe cooperation

Updated: 09:20’ - 26/09/2006

Economic cooperation in trade and investment as well as cooperation in the finance and science and technology sectors should continue to be a priority of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) process, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung at the sixth ASEM, which ended in Helsinki, Finland, on September 11.

“To enhance cooperation effectiveness, it is important to work together to narrow the development gap and assist developing economies, including efforts to put in place preferential mechanisms and avoid unfair protectionist and discriminatory measures,” he said.

The meeting adopted the Presidential Declaration, the Helsinki Declaration on the Future of ASEM, and the sixth ASEM Declaration on the Change of Global Weather.

The meeting themed “10 Years of ASEM: Global Challenges - Joint Responses,” aims to enhance negotiations and cooperation in settling major international problems relating to global peace, security and development, according to Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem.

He said leaders agreed to deepen their partnership, making it suitable to future challenges, and to promote economic, financial, trade, energy and environmental cooperation.

Important initiatives, including the first ASEM information and technology ministers’ conference in Vietnam next December, the ASEM forum on energy security policy, and Vietnam’s publication of the Book on Regular Reports on Trade and Investment in ASEM were approved at the meeting, Mr. Khiem said.-
