DIRECTIVE No. 1408/CT-TTg: Standard conformity rules to secure toys safe for children

From mid-April next year, children’s toys, either domestically made or imported, can be marketed only after obtaining standard conformity certificates, being declared conformable to standards and stuck with safety stamps issued under relevant national technical regulations (promulgated in June 2009 by the Ministry Science and Technology), i.e. those on permitted limit of pH level of liquids contained in toys, or content of formaldehyde or other hazardous organic compounds in toy materials.

Electric toys and their accessories are required to be powered by an electric source of a nominal voltage of 24 V or less. All electric toy parts and connections must also be firmly insulated as inspected and certified by competent authorities using the method of testing typical samples taken from workshops or the market.

Under Prime Minister Directive No. 1408/CT-TTg of September 1, on enhancement of the protection and care for children’s health, concerned ministries and administrations are tasked to review by the end of 2010 legal documents on specific standards and technical regulations relevant to childen’s health in order to make them more helpful in protecting children of poor families and disadvantaged children.
