EU, US experts lead intellectual property seminar

Updated: 10:54’ - 20/04/2007

A workshop on intellectual property rights (IPR) in Vietnam was held on April 2 in Ho Chi Minh City by the European Commission-ASEAN Intellectual Property Rights Cooperation Program (ECAP II) and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in collaboration with the Vietnamese General Department of Customs.

The five-day workshop aims to help Vietnamese authorities better identify fake goods through European Union (EU) and US border customs techniques and help the country to battle rampant counterfeiting which threatens its international integration.

Enhancing the protection of IPR would help Vietnam attract more foreign investment and acquire market economy status from the EU, said Antonio Berenguer, trade counselor of the EC Delegation to Vietnam.

Vietnam would continue to face restrictions if it is not considered to have a market economy, especially when accusations of dumping still trouble its exporters, the counselor said, adding that foreign investors would hesitate to invest in the country if their IPR are not protected here.

According to the workshop’s press release, the EU and the US are committed to implementing an international joint strategy to combat piracy and counterfeiting globally.-
