The Prime Minister has recently approved the Vietnam Forestry Development Strategy in the 2021-30 period with a vision toward 2050.

Under Decision 523/QD-TTg dated April 1, the strategy targets to convert forestry sector into a modern economic-technical sector, and establish, manage, protect, develop and sustainably optimize forests and forest land areas.

It aims at guaranteeing equal participation of economic components to forestry activities, mobilizing social engagement and boosting scientific and technological applications to forestry development.

The strategy also centers to uphold potential and role of forests to socio-economic development, protect the environment and water security, mitigate natural disasters, response to climate change, preserve natural resources and biological diversity.

Specifically, the strategy sets a goal that by 2050, the forestry sector would become a modern, effective and highly competitive economic-technical sector, bringing into full play potential and advantages of tropical forest resources.

The forestry sector is also set to develop modern and environmentally friendly technologies, create diversified products and services with high added value, strongly participate in global value chains, and increasingly contribute to the sustainable development of the country.

Under the strategy, Vietnam would become one of world’s leading manufacturing and trading centers for wood products. Scientific and technological applications are expected to contribute up to 30 percent of forestry growth value.

To realize these goals, the strategy aims to build forestry infrastructure, modernize forestry operations and logistics services, reorganize production regions to develop key products, develop the wood processing industry in a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly manner. The State will provide support and issue policies to promote investment in the construction of at least three hi-tech forestry zones in the northern, central and southern regions in order to promote the development of the forestry sector in an advanced manner with the use of high technology.- (VLLF)
