A special fund has been set up, enabling Vietnamese embassies and consulates to offer urgent support upon request of Vietnamese citizens and businesses abroad.

The fund, with an initial amount of VND 20 billion, will help those who face serious problems they cannot overcome.

The head of a Vietnamese diplomatic mission may approve payments under USD 3,000, while the director of the fund in Vietnam may approve payments up to USD 10,000.

Payments exceeding the above levels must be reported to the Minister of Foreign Affairs for approval.

The fund will enable embassies and consulates to be more active in supporting needy people now and that more Vietnamese people are traveling, working and studying overseas, said fund’s director Duong Chi Dung.

Non-refundable grants will be used to help protect people’s life and move them to safe places in case of war, conflict, natural disaster, epidemics, terrorist attack or kidnapping, and when overseas Vietnamese need special help as approved.

Overseas Vietnamese who buy local insurance are ineligible for the special support.-
