Vietnam and Japan have agreed to promote their cooperation at the inter-parliamentary level to make bilateral ties more efficient.

Vietnam and Japan have agreed to promote their cooperation at the inter-parliamentary level to make bilateral ties more efficient.

The agreement was reached in Tokyo between Vietnam National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong and Japan Diet Speaker Yohei Kono during Mr. Trong’s visit to Japan starting from March 16.

Relations between the two legislative bodies had increased mutual understanding and trust, said the speaker.

The two leaders agreed to make greater efforts to work towards strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia in line with their previous agreements, and to share experience in lawmaking and supervisory work.

On March 17, Mr. Trong told Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko that Vietnam wished to strengthen friendly and cooperative relations with Japan in order to maximize both countries’ potential for trade.

Speaking at the Vietnam-Japan business forum in Tokyo, the chairman said the Vietnamese National Assembly would do its best to create favorable conditions for Japanese businesses and expressed his hope that the forum would pave the way for increased trade.

According to the Chairman of the Japan External Trade Organization, to attract more Japanese investors, Vietnam should overcome such weaknesses as industrial subsidy, shortage of qualified engineers and managers and poor infrastructure.
