From May 1, foreign tourists wishing to bring their motor vehicles to, and drive/ride them in, Vietnam must have the procedures for approval carried out by Vietnamese international travel service providers and obtain approval documents granted by the Ministry of Public Security.
Such is provided in Government Decree 30/2024/ND-CP dated March 7, on management of motor vehicles registered overseas and brought into Vietnam by foreigners for travelling activities.
Worthy of note, if wishing to run on public roads in Vietnam, foreign-registered vehicles must be passenger cars with right-hand drive or left-hand drive and nine seats or less, caravans or motorbikes.
In addition, such a vehicles must have a vehicle registration certificates and license number plate issued by the competent authority of the country where it has been registered and remaining valid, It is also required to have a technical safety and environmental protection inspection certificate or a document of equivalent validity.
For right-hand drive cars, a diplomatic note from a diplomatic mission, consular office or representative office of an intergovernmental organization in Vietnam is required for submission to the Ministry of Public Security upon request, clearly stating the reason for wishing to travel on Vietnam’s roads.
The maximum period for foreign vehicle’s operation on Vietnam’s roads is 45 days. In case of a force majeure event, such period may be extended for no more than 10 days.
Meanwhile, foreign motor vehicle drivers must possess driver licenses issued by their countries of origin and remaining valid for at least six months and passports or other documents valid for international travel and visas or documents valid for residence in Vietnam, unless they are entitled to visa exemption in accordance with law. In case of entry under unilateral visa exemption, their passports must remain valid for at least six months.- (VLLF)
