Vietnam demanded that China would immediately cease activities that violate Vietnam’s sovereignty and sovereign rights in the East Sea and refrain from recurrences of such violations, contribute to peace and stability in the East Sea and promote stable and healthy bilateral relations, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga said on August 5 in Hanoi.

“China’s actions have violated Vietnam’s indisputable sovereignty over the Hoang Sa Paracel Archipelago, Vietnam’s sovereign rights to the continental shelf and the 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,” she said.

These activities went against the spirit of the Declaration on the Code of Conduct in the East Sea and ran counter to the common views of the Vietnamese and Chinese leaders in sustaining peace and stability, with both sides committed to refraining from further complicating the situation in the East Sea, the spokeswoman added.-
