PM attends climate change summit
Vietnam was actively implementing a national program to respond to climate change, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said on December 16 at the United Nations Summit on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Speaking at the summit, which gathered 130 leaders from 192 countries and territories worldwide to seek agreements on solutions to cope with climate change, the Prime Minister emphasized that response to climate change was the urgent responsibility of each nation since the Earth was the common home of humans.

Vietnam was expected to face severe effects from climate change, but it was not emitting large amounts of greenhouse gas, he said, adding that Vietnam appreciated initiatives to protect the Earth’s climate and wished that countries would reach new agreements on the issue.

The Prime Minister said developed countries should make strong commitments and set specific targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the middle and long terms to keep global temperature rises below two degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

He also proposed that developed countries apply new financial regimes, transfer technologies, use the Adaptation Fund and raise the capacity of poorer nations to respond to climate change, and suggested the establishment of a joint organization to coordinate climate change response activities around the world.

Developing countries should also contribute to global efforts by cutting greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining sustainable development, he said.-
