Decision No. 742/QD-TTg: Sixteen ocean reserve zones planned

With the objectives of preserving marine ecosystems and saltwater species of high economic value and raising living standards of coastal and island fishermen, 16 sea conservation zones, including Tran, Co To, Bach Long Vy, Cat Ba, Me, Con Co, Cu Lao Cham, Ly Son, Nam Yet, Nui Chua, Phu Quy, Hon Cau, Con Dao and Phu Quoc islands and Hai Van-Son Cha and Nha Trang bays, will be established nationwide during 2010-15.

Also according to a master plan on sea conservation zones issued together with Prime Minister Decision No. 742/QD-TTg of May 26, by 2020, the number of these zones will increase to cover at least 0.24% of Vietnam’s total sea area with 30% of their areas placed under strict conservation, and the total capital for this goal will be some VND 460 billion from central and local state budgets and financial aid of international and non-governmental organizations.

Foreign and domestic investors will be attracted to invest in these zones in various forms. Coastal and island communities will also be encouraged to participate in the management of these zones.-
