The Prime Minister has introduced a plan to perform tasks of connecting the national electronic identification application, VNeID, with the electronic identification systems of ASEAN member states.
Under Decision 1830/QD-TTg, effective as of September 22, VNeID will be connected with the electronic identification systems of Singapore and Laos. The connection will be later expanded to other ASEAN countries, thereby supporting the simplification of immigration procedures and cross-border exchange of electronic identification information.
The decision says that the connection must be carried out within a specific scope, for specified target users, and with agreed roadmap, methods and responsibilities of relevant parties.
Such connection aims to simplify immigration procedures, reduce repeated declarations and the requirement to present physical documents while shortening inspection, verification and processing time at border gates. E-identification information on VNeID and ASEAN countries’ systems will be utilised, authenticated, and cross-checked within an agreed scope.
For the immediate future, cross-border e-identification connection, verification and information exchange will be experimented during the immigration process at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat International Airports.
Under the decision, cooperation, connection and data exchange must comply with the laws of Vietnam and relevant ASEAN countries and relevant treaties to which Vietnam is a contracting party. At the same time, such activities must ensure security, safety, data sovereignty, personal data protection, and uninterrupted operation.- (VLLF)
